For 95% of the population mother tongue is Hungarian. This Finno-Ugric language is unrelated to any neighbour countries but is distantly related to Finnish.

Hungary has been a home for a significant number of Jews, especially after being persecuted in Russia during 1900s. However, Hungarian Jews did not escape the holocaust during World War II and hundreds of thousands of them were either deported to concentration camps or simply executed.
